Recent Beauregard graduate Hayden Hillyer (left) is going to make a little history.
HIllyer, who had previously been committed to play baseball at Central Alabama Community College next season, received an offer from Troy University on Monday and has accepted it, becoming the first player in the history of Hornets baseball to get a scholarship to a Division I school.
Hillyer was named a first-team All-State outfielder in Class 5A after a senior season in which he led the Hornets with a .478 average and a .623 on-base percentage. He also hit four home runs, had 36 RBI and set school records in hits (55) and doubles (18).
He also led the school in GPA (4.95) and was the senior class valedictorian.
His teammate, catcher Cody Weems also accepted an offer to play at Enterprise-Ozark Community College next year.
Weems hit .340, led the team with 10 home runs, drove in 33 and set a school record in slugging percentage (.777). He also caught nearly every game for Beaureagrd, which set the school record in wins (32) and advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in program history.
More on this in tomorrow’s paper. And hopefully a picture too, in a while.
