That Auburn High coach Matt Cimo getting doused after his Tigers won the 6A state baseball title, the school’s first in 23 years.

Cimo was named 6A Coach of the Year and five of his players earned All-State honors when the Alabama Sports Writers Association released its All-State teams and end of season awards yesterday.

Senior pitcher Reid Carter and sophomore second baseman Tanner Cimo - the coach’s son - both earned first-team honors in 6A, while junior pitcher Drew Eiland, sophomore third baseman Grant Massey and junior outfielder Todd Thompson all earned honorable mentions.

Beauregard, which responded to its first year in 5A by advancing to the state quarterfinals and having its best season in school history, also raised some eyebrows with the sports writers. Coach A.J. Kehoe was named Coach of the Year, and senior outfielder Hayden Hillyer and senior catcher Cody Weems both made the first team. Junior first baseman/pitcher/all-around intimidating slugger Kyle Brown also earned an honorable mention.

Glenwood, winners of its 17th AISA state title this year, placed three on the AISA first team: senior pitcher/third baseman Mathew Tooker, and senior outfielders Brett Bowers and David Langley.

For going a perfect 10-0 on the mound, Tooker was named AISA Pitcher of the Year. And for adding in a .452 average and 51 RBI at the plate, he was named AISA Most Valuable Player.

Glenwood senior outfielder Stevie Argo also earned an honorable mention in the AISA, along with Lee-Scott senior second baseman Jace Harper.

Dadeville also had a good year, even though it was somewhat under the radar. The Tigers advanced to the state quarterfinals, where they fell in three games to eventual 3A runner-up Trinity.

Senior first baseman Jordan Moran, junior outfielder Quinn Harrelson and sophomore pitcher Cameron Carleton all made honorable mention.

So that’s it: 16 in all - seven first team and nine honorable mention - and two coaches of the year for an area that produced two state champions, two state quarterfinalists and four other teams (Reeltown, Loachapoka, Lee-Scott and Springwood) that made the playoffs.

Sorry if this seemed rushed, but I have to jet to the ASWA convention in Bammerham. Andrew Gribble’s going to be there!!! Yes, THE Andrew Gribble!!!

I can hardly contain my excitement.
