PREP BASEBALL: Beauregard wins Lake Martin Classic
ALEXANDER CITY — Kyle Brown and Nathan Edwards sent two bombs into the trees beyond the fence at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex on Thursday, helping send Beauregard to the finals of the Lake Martin Classic with a 5-3 win over Sylacauga.

ALEX CITY — The No. 7 team in Class 5A made short work of the No. 5 team in Class 4A on Monday, as Beauregard’s baseball team blanked Cleburne County, 10-0, in the opening round of the Lake Martin Classic.

AREA ROUNDUP: Lee-Scott picks up two wins
WETUMPKA — The 10th-ranked Warriors’ baseball team finished 2-2 at the Edgewood Tournament on Friday and Saturday, beating Bessmer, 14-1, on Friday after a 10-4 loss to No. 2 Glenwood earlier in the day, and No. 9 Autauga, 4-3, on Saturday before dropping a 6-4 decision to the third-ranked hosts.

WETUMPKA — The Glenwood baseball team exacted some revenge on its rival Lee-Scott, beating the Warriors, 9-2, on Friday night in a tournament at Edgewood Academy.

PREP SPORTS: First baseball, softball polls out
Four area baseball and two area softball teams are among the top 10 in the state in their respective classes, according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s first poll of 2010, released today.

TALLASSEE — In the first game, Tallassee used the long ball. In the second game, the Tigers used dominant pitching. That all resulted in Tallassee’s doubleheader sweep of Alabama Christian on Tuesday night.

Central’s Auburn Spring Invitational ended with a 2-1 quarterfinal loss at the hands of Hoover on Saturday, two rounds earlier than its runner-up finish last year.

Opelika took a 16-4 pounding at the hands of Shaw (Ga.) before handing out a 13-3 one of its own to split a doubleheader Saturday.
