Fay’s remnants soak drought-parched South

Floridians, meanwhile, continued to mop up floodwaters created by the storm that stuck around for a week and made a historic four landfalls, dumping more than 30 inches of rain.

Rapidly growing Hurricane Gustav headed for a collision with impoverished Haiti on Tuesday. The storm was also on track to slice along the south coast of Cuba during the week — possibly growing into a perilous Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph (185 kph) winds by the weekend as it enters the Gulf.

Crews work to restore power, clean up after weekend storms
Alabama Power officials said Sunday they couldn’t give a timeline for when power would be restored to every customer affected by the weekend storms.

STEINHATCHEE, Fla. — As Tropical Storm Fay finally got on track Friday to leave Florida behind, flood-stricken homeowners got an encouraging sign: Muddy brown water lines began appearing on the sides of homes, a clue that floodwaters were receding.

Tropical Storm Fay continued its slow, wet trudge across Florida for a fifth day Friday, prompting communities farther inland and on the state’s Gulf coast to brace for what could be drenching rains. It is just the fourth storm to make landfall in Florida three separate times, and the first in nearly 50 years. Before it crosses the Panhandle by the weekend, it could bring buckets of rain and power outages.

Tropical Storm Fay expected to hit Fla. 3rd time
Tropical Storm Fay lumbered offshore Thursday for what was likely to be a brief stay over the Atlantic Ocean’s energizing waters after flooding hundreds of homes with torrential rain, trapping residents and leaving much of Florida a soggy mess. Forecasters expected the storm to complete its zig-zag course by hitting the state for a third time in a week, along with Georgia, but didn’t think it would strengthen to a hurricane over the open waters.
