AU ROUNDUP: Basketball team runs for a cause

For the third-straight year, members of the Auburn men’s basketball team, Coach Jeff Lebo and the coaching staff will participate in the two-mile Breast Cancer Awareness “Race With A Mission” run for the East Alabama Medical Center’s Foundation for Breast Cancer Early Detection today. 

The race begins at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Moore’s Mill Road and Ogletree Road and the entry fee is $16. Lucas Hargrove won last year’s race and also recorded the team’s best time for the second-straight year.

“Our team and I really enjoy running in this event each year and it is for such a great cause,” said Lebo. “I would like to encourage as many people as possible to participate.”

Cross country hosts Tiger Invitational
The No. 21 Auburn men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the Tiger Invitational today at Indian Pines Golf Course, with 38 men’s and 36 women’s teams set to compete. Due to the growth of the meet, four races will take place today, with the first getting under way at 8:45 a.m.

The first of two women’s races will take place at 8:45 a.m. with the Women’s Blue Race. At 9:30 a.m. the Women’s Orange Mel Rosen race will start and feature Auburn’s women, along with three ranked teams in No. 2 Washington, No. 3 Florida State and No. 27 Iowa.

The men will take to the course at 10:15 a.m. with the Men’s Orange Mel Rosen race with ranked teams in No. 21 Auburn and No. 26 Florida State. The 11 a.m. Men’s Blue Race will feature fifth-ranked Alabama.

Schepperle named SEC Golfer of the Month
Auburn’s Candace Schepperle has been named Southeastern Conference Female Golfer of the Month for September, league officials announced Friday.

Schepperle, a junior from Birmingham, placed in the top five atAuburn’s two tournaments in September - placing second at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 26-28, and tied for fourth at the NCAA Fall Preview, held in Owings Mill, Md., Sept. 7-8.

Soccer falls at Ole Miss
Katy Frierson evened the score, but Auburn was unable to move ahead as Ole Miss defeated the Tigers, 3-1, in a Friday night Southeastern Conference showdown.

Auburn fell to 5-5-2, 1-1-1 SEC, while the Rebels moved to 4-5-2, 2-1-0 SEC.

Auburn and Ole Miss exchanged shots in the game’s opening six minutes, but it was the Rebels who got on the board first on a Taylor Cunningham goal.

Volleyball swept at Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Despite two late comebacks, the Auburn volleyball team (5-11, 0-5 SEC) was not able to hold off Tennessee (9-6, 4-2 SEC) in a 3-0 (15-25, 23-25, 26-28) loss.

Jessica Glover and Olympia Haney led the team with 10 kills each, while Jonelle Wallace added six. Glover also led the team by hitting .308, her third match in a row over .300.

Women’s golf tied for 9th at Tar Heel Invite
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 14 Auburn’s women’s golf team finished the first day of play at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational tied for ninth after posting a 20-over-308 Friday at the UNC Finley Golf Course.

No. 8 Virginia and No. 23 Wake Forest are tied for first at 6-over-294. Third-ranked North Carolina is third (299), followed by No. 20 Louisville and Texas A&M, who are tied for fourth (301),  No. 6 Vanderbilt (302), No. 15 Florida State (306), Ohio State (307) and Auburn is tied for ninth with Kent State at 20-over-308 to round out the top 10.

Candace Schepperle led the Tigers, carding an even par round of 72. She notched three birdies on the front and back nine, but double bogeyed on Nos. 8 and 15. Schepperle is one of four players tied for sixth. Five players registered a 1-under-71 and are tied for the lead.

Men’s tennis starts strong at Ga. Tech
ATLANTA — The Auburn men’s tennis team opened its fall season Friday as the Tigers competed in the first day of the Georgia Tech Fall Tennis Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Tigers racked up five singles wins and four doubles wins in the first day of action and will continue play at 7 a.m. today.

Senior Lukas Marsoun led the way for the Tigers, going undefeated in his one singles match and two doubles matches. He defeated Georgia Tech’s Austin Roebuck, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in his singles match and will take on Vanderbilt’s James Moye in the Round of 16 of the “A” singles draw.

Equestrian makes first road trip of season
The Auburn equestrian team travels for the first time this season to Blythewood, S.C., today to face conference rival South Carolina at 1 p.m. at One Wood Farm.

“It’s an SEC meet, so they’re always good,” said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. “When any SEC team is on the road, they know the challenge is there. Our girls are riding really well. We are excited to be traveling. We feel like we’re ready to take on anybody.”

The Tigers are 1-0 on the season with their win coming against Fresno State. The Gamecocks are also 1-0, having defeated Kansas State in the season opener.
