Published: October 7, 2009
The Auburn softball team continues its fall exhibition season with a pair of games Thursday at Jane B. Moore Field.
The Tigers will take on Chattanooga State at 5 p.m. and Chipola Junior College at 7 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
“So far I have been very pleased with the play of our freshmen,” Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. “We have a lot of new faces and these games have really helped them. Overall, these games have been good in helping us build some cohesiveness as a team and working on getting a better feel for each other in game situations.”
Auburn began the fall season with a pair of wins last Thursday, defeating Pensacola Junior College and Georgia Perimeter Junior College.
The Tigers feature seven newcomers to the team, including infielder Kelsey Cartwright who earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors in Tennessee at Goodpasture High School.
Tennis duo’s success continues
Auburn tennis sophomore Alex Stamchev improved to 3-0 to advance to the singles main draw at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Stamchev battled back to defeat Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman in the final two sets (6-3, 6-3). With the win, Stamchev earned a spot in the 64-man singles main draw, which starts today.
Junior Tim Puetz also competed for Auburn, facing Oklahoma’s Costin Pavel in the third round of qualifying singles. Pavel came away with the 7-6, 6-1 win over Puetz.
The Auburn duo is set to begin doubles competition today, taking part in the 32-team doubles main draw.
