MONTGOMERY - Glenwood pinch runner Dalton Dempsey came around to score on an error in the bottom of the eighth against Monroe Academy, giving the Gators a 12-11 win and their 17th AISA state championship at Paterson Field on Saturday.

Mathew Tooker led off the inning with a single, then Dempsey replaced him, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a balk.

Then, when Dudley Taylor hit a chopper to Tanner Smith, Smith bounced the throw to first and Dempsey came in with the winning run, jumping into the air as he crossed the plate.

The No. 2 Gators (38-10) had to fight off numerous charges from the No. 5 Volunteers (29-9). Glenwood had a 5-0 lead after two innings, a 9-5 lead after three, a 10-7 lead after four and an 11-10 lead after six.

Jacob Livingston, in his last game at Glenwood, pitched all eight innings with a broken bone in his foot and threw 134 pitches.

He also worked through six Glenwood errors, which led to five unearned runs. Livingston (6-2) gave up 11 runs (six earned) on 10 hits, striking out four and walking six.

Kyle Switzer was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI, earning tournament MVP honors. Stevie Argo scored three times, Brett Bowers was 2-for-4, Tooker was 2-for-5 with two RBI, Skyler Murphy was 3-for-4 with three runs and Livingston was 2-for-3 with the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the sixth.

Livingston, Tooker and Murphy joined Switzer on the All-Tournament team.
