AREA ROUNDUP: Beauregard sweeps Tallassee
BEAUREGARD — Beauregard’s boys and girls basketball teams swept Tallassee in their area opener Friday night.
The Hornet boys took an 81-58 win over the Tigers, led by 23 points from Eric Dowell and 21 more from Duwone Scott.
Demetrius Reese added 10 for Beauregard (2-1, 1-0 in area play).
The Hornet girls topped Tallassee, 53-40.
Valeeta Bellamy scored 24 points for Beauregard (4-1, 1-0) and Starkeisha Scott scored 8.
Both teams will travel to face Auburn High on Tuesday, with the girls game beginning at 6 p.m.
Ballard pounds Covenant Christian
Ballard opened the Ballard Tip Off Classic with a 65-32 win over Covenant Christian on Friday night.
Jud Butler scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles (2-0). Kyle Hammock had 12 points, and Judson Scott and Ben Causland had 8 points each.
The Eagles will face Mt. Zion today at 1:30 p.m. in the championship game of the tournament.
Opelika Middle sweeps Wacoochie
Opelika Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade boys took wins over Wacoochie in their season openers Thursday night.
The seventh graders defeated the Panthers, 30-24. Malcolm Buggs led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
The eighth graders took a 59-30 win. Daniel Torbert had 18 points, and Calvin Bryant and Trey Purter pitched in 10 points each.
