AREA ROUNDUP: Glenwood splits with Strong Rock Christian
PHENIX CITY — The Gators’ basketball teams split with Strong Rock Christian (Ga.) on Saturday, with the girls winning, 34-23, before the boys fell, 51-48.
Bree Nowlin led the Glenwood girls (1-0) in their season opener, scoring 12 points. Karley Franklin netted 9, and Mandy Marriott added nine rebounds in the win.
Glenwood’s boys (0-2) trailed by 11 going into the fourth quarter but came up just short in their comeback bid.
Elliott Lynn led the Gators with a double-double — 15 points and 11 rebounds — Dalton Dempsey scored 12, and Alex Quinney added 8.
Both teams return to action Tuesday, when they will host Lakeside with the girls starting at 5:30 and the boys to follow.
Smiths Station sweeps, Opelika goes 4-1
PHENIX CITY — The Panthers’ wrestling team swept five matches to win first place at the Central Duals on Saturday, beating Hardaway (Ga.) (45-36), Benjamin Russell (66-17), LaGrange (Ga.) (63-18), Columbus (Ga.) (45-32) and Hardaway again in the championship (45-36).
Opelika finished 4-1 at the match, beating Russell County (63- 18), LaGrange twice (51-27 and 63-16), and Shaw (Ga.) (60-24), and losing to Hardaway (48-32).
Bradley Martin, Anthony Green, Andrew Wilkins, Kyle Bruffy, Gary Robinson and Tom Scott all went 5-0 on the day for the Panthers.
Brian White (103 pounds), Cole McCarty (125), Jonathan Bright (130), Rico Lewis (160) and Xavier Drake all went undefeated for the Bulldogs.
Smiths Station hosts Troup (Ga.), Sidney Lanier and Jeff Davis on Tuesday.
Notasulga drops a pair to St. Jude
MONTGOMERY — The Blue Devils’ basketball teams were swept on the road by the Pirates on Friday, with the girls falling, 47-27, before the boys lost, 67-54.
Rachel Foster scored 12 to lead Notasulga’s girls (0-4), while Kimesha Jackson pulled down 20 rebounds.
Fred McKenzie led the boys team (0-4) with 19 points, and Kareen Sullen added 10.
Both teams play at Tallassee on Tuesday.
AHS JV boys win
Big nights from Ty Smith and Corey Hall helped the Tigers’ junior varsity basketball team to a 50-19 win over Smiths Station on Saturday.
Hall scored 20 to lead Auburn, and Smith added 17.
The Tigers return to action against Beauregard on Tuesday, with the B-team playing a 4:30 p.m. and the girls and boys games following.
CORRECTION
An article in Saturday’s paper incorrectly reported the Loachapoka football team’s record. The Indians are actually 11-1.
It also incorrectly reported the recipients of Patrick Moore’s two touchdown passes in Loachapoka’s 19-17 win over Sweet Water. Greg Moss caught the first touchdown and Travis Echols hauled in the second.
