AREA ROUNDUP: Opelika cruises past Beauregard at tourney

Opelika continued its hot start to the 2008-09 season with a 70-29 win over Beauregard on Thursday night in the Auburn High Holiday Tournament.

Tay Calloway led the Bulldogs (5-0) with 15 points and six steals, and Jacoby Payne had 10 points and four rebounds.

“We put our press on and jumped on them pretty quick,” OHS head coach John Wadsworth said. “Our pressure got to them early.”

David Thomas and Eric Dowdell scored 9 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

Coming off a 9-13 season with what is still a young team, Wadsworth has been happy with his team’s start.

“The kids are really playing hard,” he said. “We’re playing all our kids. I give all the credit to the kids. We’re playing hard, so we’re going to try to keep it going.”

This year’s OHS team features only two seniors.

In the earlier game in the AHS tournament Thursday, Reeltown defeated Trinity.

OHS will face Reeltown tonight at 8:30 p.m. Auburn High will meet Russell County at 7 p.m., and Beauregard will face Trinity at 5:30.

OMS improves to 3-1 with tourney win
COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Opelika Middle School eighth-graders decimated Double Churches Middle School, 66-19, in the Percy E. Griffin Tournament on Thursday.

Calvin Bryant led the Bulldogs (3-1) with 12 points, and Channing Stribling and T.J. Presley had 11 points apiece.

The OMS boys will play again Monday at Russell County.

Loachapoka tops Beulah on Wednesday
LOACHAPOKA — Loachapoka’s season opener was a successful one as the Indians took a 61-33 win over Beulah on Wednesday.

Quin Richardson led Poka (1-0) with 14 points, and Jontavius Willis and Tommy White had 10 points apiece.

Jordan Wimberly and Justin Harper led the Bobcats (3-2) with 11 points apiece.

Beulah will hit the road for its third game of the week tonight when it faces Woodland.
