AREA ROUNDUP: Opelika sweeps Beauregard

Opelika picked up a sweep of Beauregard on Tuesday in high school basketball play.

The Bulldogs’ boys won, 62-41, while the girls were 49-35 winners.

For Opelika’s boys (1-0), Tay Calloway scored 19 points and Jamarius Blunt added 17.

Beauregard was led by Dewone Scott’s 12 points and Eric Dowell’s 11.

Opelika’s Ambria Bridges had 7 points and nine rebounds to pace the Bulldog girls, while Kayla Whatley had nine rebounds.

Kiara Dexter, Ambriea Williams and Jasmine Cannon also combined to score 8 points for Opelika (2-2).

Opelika hosts Wetumpka on Thursday.

Auburn High sweeps past Tallassee
Auburn High’s boys and girls basketball teams picked up a sweep of Tallassee on Tuesday at the Auburn Fieldhouse.

Auburn’s boys won, 61-45, with the girls taking a 52-43 win.

On the boys side, Auburn (1-0) got 20 points from Jason Webb, and 11 each from Michael Willis and Will Walker.

Tallassee was led by 16 points from Mike Smith.

For the girls, Auburn (3-1) was led by Tarnesha Stephens’ 16 points. Kiara Scott added 12 points and Olivia Cook had 11.

Tallassee was led by 11 points from Dorika Harris.

Both Auburn teams will host Smiths Station — a non-area opponent this season — on Saturday.

Ballard opens with lopsided win
Ballard Christian’s boys basketball team opened up the season with a win Tuesday night over Trinity Christian, 57-34.

Jud Butler led the Eagles with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. Kyle Hammock added 18 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Ballard’s JV team won, 32-21. Joseph Sullen scored the winning basket with less than 3 seconds remaining. Judson Scott led the Ballard JV team with 24 points.

Ballard will host its annual tipoff tournament this weekend.

Glenwood boys pick up win
PHENIX CITY — Nehemiah Horace scored 16 points as Glenwood’s boys beat Central-Fellowship (Ga.), 48-35.

Dalton Dempsey added 15 points, while Stevie Argo chipped in 10.

The Gators (2-0) plays at state power Tuscaloosa Academy on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Opelika 9th-grade basketball team wins
The Opelika ninth-grade boys basketball team beat Beauregard on Monday night, 45-20.

Ladarius Payne led the Bulldogs with 19 points.
