AREA ROUNDUP: Opelika sweeps Russell County

The Opelika boys and girls basketball teams swept Russell County on Tuesday. The boys won 64-47, while the girls were 56-55 winners.

Tay Callaway led the Bulldog boys (13-4, 3-2 Class 6A-Area 7) with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while David Thomas added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Opelika will play in Central’s MLK Tournament beginning Friday in Phenix City.

For Opelika’s girls, Ambreia Williams led the Bulldogs (9-10, 3-2) with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Jasmine Cannon added 12 points and six rebounds, while Kieara Dexter scored 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The girls will play LaFayette in the first round of the Lanett MLK Tournament at 6 p.m. Monday.

Auburn High swept by Stanhope Elmore
MONTGOMERY — Auburn’s boys and girls lost to Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday night, 62-52 and 56-47, respectively.

Calvin Jenkins led the AHS boys (10-11, 2-2 Class 6A-Area 8) with 14 points, while Jason Webb scored 12 and Michael Willis added 9.

In the girls game, Tarnesha Stephens led the Tigers (12-7, 2-2) with 14 points, while Olivia Cook added 12.

Auburn hosts Wetumpka on Friday.

Poka boys earn win
BEAUREGARD — The Loachapoka boys beat Beauregard, 51-48, with Jontavious Willis leading the way with 15 points. Tommy White scored 11 for the Indians in the win.

Beauregard (5-9) was led by Demetrius Reese’s 13 points.

LaFayette girls hold off Beulah
LAFAYETTE — Despite Victoria Richardson’s double-double, the Beulah girls fell to LaFayette, 46-43, in a nail-biter.

Richardson scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Bobcats (10-6), while Ariel Underwood added 11 points and Iesha Crutchfield scored
10 points and five rebounds.

Beulah hosts B.B. Comer on Friday.

Lanett picks up victory
LANETT — Aquendall Hughley scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Lanett boys to a 77-52 win over Clay County.

Nirobi Hughley added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers (12-5), while Stantavious Roberts scored 8 points and dished out 10 assists.

Lanett will play LaFayette on Friday.

Ballard back in the win column
Kyle Hammock’s 32 points and 15 rebounds led Ballard Christian to a 77-42 win over Golden Acres on Tuesday.

Ballard improved to 7-7 overall, and stayed unbeaten at 4-0 in the ICSGA 1A West Region.

Judson Butler added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Ben Causland added 11 points.

Ballard’s JV team also won, 34-28. Joseph Sullen had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Judson Scott chipped in with 11 points,
while David Good added 12 rebounds.

Lyman Ward drops 3rd consecutive
CAMP HILL — The Lyman Ward Rangers lost to Coosa Valley Academy, 68-61.

Justin Minor scored 26 points for Lyman Ward. He also had eight steals. Amory Thompson added 13 points and Kyle Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds for the Rangers (5-6).

Coosa Valley Academy was led by J.B. Ripley’s 33 points.

OMS sweeps Russell County
The Opelika Middle School seventh-grade boys (6-2) defeated Russell County, 46-22. Shontrez Tolbert and Johntavious Doss led the bulldogs with 9 points apiece.

The OMS eighth-grade boys (10-2) also defeated Russell County, 42-21. Channing Stribling led the bulldogs with 11 points, while T.J. Presley chipped in 8. 

The eighth-graders play Handley today. Both teams will travel Thursday to South Girard

The OMS girls beat Russell County, 37-10. The team returns to action on today, hosting Handley at 4:30 p.m.
