Indians trying to recover
Loachapoka was rolling.
Behind a remarkable defense, the Indians had powered through their first four games of the year, pitching shutouts in the last three and climbing to No. 5 in the ASWA Class 1A Top 10.
But after last Friday, Loachapoka has a blemish on its mark — a visit to Class 2A Reeltown resulted in a 24-14 loss.
Head coach Jerome Tate was obviously unhappy with his team’s performance, saying simply, “I’m not very pleased with it,” following the loss.
Loachapoka entered the Reeltown game having allowed just 14 points all season. But the Indians gave up nearly twice that to the high-powered Rebels’ ground attack.
Fortunately for Loachapoka, though, is the fact the Reeltown loss has no effect on its Class 1A-Region 4 mark which is still a perfect 3-0.
The other thing remaining perfect is the big zero when looking at the points allowed by the Indians in Region play. Loachapoka has outscored Region opponents, 127-0.
Friday, the Indians will face a Winterboro team coming off a 35-6 loss.
The Bulldogs are 2-3 on the year, 2-1 in Region 4 play and tied for third in the league with Wadley.
Notasulga (1-4) at No. 6 Talladega Co.-Cent. (4-1)
One thing’s for sure, first-year Notasulga head coach Roland Bell doesn’t seem scared to face anyone.
The Class 1A Blue Devils opened the year against 5A Booker T. Washington and played 3A LaFayette last week.
This week is another doozy for Notasulga. But this time it’s a Class 1A team, and a team it’s forced to play as a member of 1A-Region 4.
Notasulga will head north on Friday for a visit to No. 6 Talladega County-Central.
The Fighting Tigers were undefeated and ranked No. 2 until last Friday when it lost to Class 4A Munford, 25-7. In its four wins to open the year, TCC outscored its opponents, 158-47.
TCC was undefeated last season until falling to Sweet Water in the Class 1A state championship game.
Notasulga, who snapped a 15-game losing streak two weeks ago, fell hard last Friday to the much larger LaFayette Bulldogs, 66-28.
AISA
No. 10 Lee-Scott (4-1) at Evangel (1-4)
Friday will serve as a tune up for a brutal stretch of games Lee-Scott will face to end the regular season.
LSA, from AISA’s Class 3A, will travel to face a struggling 2A Evangel squad.
The Lions lost to Lakeside, 36-14 last week and have been outscored 198-34 in their last four games — all losses.
Lee-Scott, on the other hand, is riding a four-game win streak after beating Hooper, 35-20.
Getting a fifth consecutive shouldn’t be a big problem for the Warriors, but things get much tougher in the coming weeks. LSA ends the regular season with No. 4 Pike Liberal, No. 10 Glenwood, No. 6 Fort Dale and a 5-1 Lowndes Academy team flirting with cracking the ASWA Top 10.
No. 9 Glenwood (3-2) at Lowndes (5-1)
A week after getting hammered by Pike Liberal Arts, Glenwood took some frustration out on non-region foe Prattville Christian last week, 37-0.
The Gators again go out of region on Friday, facing 2A Lowndes, a team coming off a 49-6 win over Autauga Academy.
Taylor Road (2-4) at Springwood (2-4)
After a promising start to the year, things haven’t clicked for Springwood.
Last week the Wildcats suffered their fourth loss of the year, dropping a 14-12 decision to Shelby Academy.
Class 2A Springwood will take on 3A Taylor Road Friday, a squad bringing up the bottom of the Region that includes teams like Lee-Scott and Glenwood.
Dixie (0-5) at Chambers (2-3)
After opening year 0-3, Chambers has hit a two-game win streak after beating Cornerstone, 31-28 last Friday.
The streak is likely to go to three consecutive. Dixie is winless and has been outscored, 149-26 in five games.
Lyman Ward (1-4) at Crenshaw (4-1)
Lyman Ward will be trying to bounce back from a 42-12 loss to Abbeville Christian.
Crenshaw, though, has won four consecutive games.
ICSGA
Ballard (6-1) at Evangel (6-1)
Ballard will take on its toughest test, by far, of the Eagles’ first-ever season with an Eight-Man football team.
Ballard beat North Georgia last week, 42-24.
Evangel suffered its first lost last week, falling to Freedom Academy, 42-20.
But before that, the Lightning had three consecutive shutout wins by 50 points or more.
On a side note regarding Ballard, the Eagles will get to add a home game to the 2008 season thanks to their new lights.
Oct. 10 was scheduled as a trip to face Heritage Christian, but that school hasn’t yet installed lights.
The game will now be a home game for the Eagles.
