Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of stories previewing Friday’s high school football games.

Beauregard went right back to work on Monday, preparing for Friday’s non-region showdown with Holtville.

But there’s no doubt the sting was still felt, at least a little — the sting of knowing how close the Hornets were to knocking off Eufaula last Friday.

Beauregard had multiple chances to take down the state’s No. 8-ranked Class 5A team and remain unbeaten in Region 2 play.

But it wasn’t meant to be as Eufaula escaped with a 24-13 win.

Part of Beauregard’s work this week in preparing for Holtville has been cutting down on hurting themselves.

“We’ve just got to quit making those mistakes. Without a turnover and some bad penalties we’re right in the middle of it,” Beauregard head coach Smitty Grider said following the loss to Eufaula.

Trailing, 10-7, in the third quarter last week, Beauregard’s pressure forced a 21-yard punt that gave the Hornets possession at the Eufaula 26.

But on the first play the Hornets fumbled the ball right back to the Tigers, who turned the break into 7points.

Several untimely penalties also hurt Beauregard drives and an easy interception in the end zone was mishandled — right into the arms of a Eufaula receiver for a touchdown.

Holtville, from Class 4A-Region 2, enters Friday’s contest with a 2-2 record.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 14-13 win last week over Alabama Christian.

No. 10 Dadeville (4-0) at Randolph Co. (3-1)
Dadeville has been one of the area’s biggest surprises this season. After going 0-10 in 2007, the Tigers are 4-0 and in the ASWA Class 3A Top 10 this week after whipping then-No. 2 Trinity, 46-15.

In that game, Dadeville quarterback Eric Vickers connected on 22-of-32 passes for 306 yards.

He also had five first-half touchdowns, four going to Tre McKinney.

Ranburne (1-3) at Beulah (0-4)
Beulah is still searching for its first win of 2008 after falling to Marbury, 42-22 last week.

The injury-plagued Bobcats have struggled mightily on both sides of the ball — scoring just 14 points per game while giving up 41.3.

Ranburne is a Class 2A-Region 5 squad coming off a 28-22 loss to Randolph County.

Chilton County (0-4) at Tallassee (3-1)
At the midway point of the season, many teams are taking the non-region week to play out-of-classification teams.

Not Tallassee.

The Tigers will host fellow 5A team Chilton County.

Tallassee has been on a roll the past two weeks. The Tigers knocked of Eufaula, then ranked No. 1, two weeks ago and followed with a 33-12 win over Rehobeth last week.

BTW (1-3) at Russell County (1-3)
Class 5A BTW will host Class 6A Russell County — two teams with identical records and both trying to rebound from lopsided losses.

BTW lost to Carroll-Ozark last week, 34-15. Russell County was dealt a 49-18 setback by Central.
