PREP FOOTBALL: Playoffs to start without Opelika

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

Seventy-five seconds in Dothan kept Opelika out of the playoffs for the first time since 1997.

With Dothan and Enterprise’s wins Friday night — coupled with wins by Carroll-Ozark and Eufaula — Opelika became the odd team out in a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots in Class 6A-Region 3.

With Friday’s results, Dothan and Enterprise tied for tiebreaker (n) — “team whose defeated opponents have the most victories” — with Enterprise taking third by virtue of their head-to-head win over Dothan and the Tigers taking fourth.

Opelika finished one win behind the two, and finishes the season at 6-3, 4-3 in the region.

Enterprise (7-3, 4-3) travels to Wetumpka next week and Dothan (7-3, 4-3) travels to No. 2 Prattville.

“Obviously I’m disappointed for our kids, for our coaches and for our fans,” Bulldogs coach Brian Blackmon said. “It’s a disappointing deal to get put out that way, but those are the rules.”
