Former Auburn High star Umenyiora out for year with Giants
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, a former star at Auburn High, will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee.
Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team on Sunday that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus.

Auburn Dixie Majors win again in World Series
DYERSBURG, Tenn. — The Auburn Dixie Majors (17-19) All-Stars’ continued their World Series run Monday with a 6-3 win against Florida.
That win moved Auburn’s record to 3-0 heading into Monday night’s game against South Carolina, which ended before press time.

LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dirt Devils lose softball World Series opener
MCDONOUGH, Ga. — The Auburn Dirt Devils softball team (16-and-under) faces a difficult road to the championship at the ISA World Series. The Dirt Devils lost their first game of the World Series, 10-5 in five innings, to the Orlando Wildcats.
The loss drops the Dirt Devils into the tournament’s losers’ bracket.
Opelika’s Glidewell wins Southeastern Junior Golf Match Play Championship
The Southeastern Junior Golf Tour’s Match Play Championship started with 69 of the region’s top golfers, ages 14-19, vying for the crown.
It ended with Opelika’s Daniel Glidewell standing alone.

All-Star McCann leads Braves past Padres
SAN DIEGO — All-Star catcher Brian McCann says he likes being “locked in.” His Atlanta Braves teammates like him that way, too.
McCann homered and drove in three runs to help the Braves rout the San Diego Padres 12-3 on Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game series.
Auburn Dixie Majors win one at sub-state
MONTGOMERY — The Auburn Dixie Majors (17-19) All-Stars played two games Sunday in the sub-state tournament at Patterson Field.
Auburn won the first game, defeating Bellingrath, 8-7. The second game, against Westside Mobile, ended after press time.

MONTGOMERY — The Auburn Dixie Majors (17-19) All-Stars defeated Brantley, 12-2, in six innings, to advance in the sub-state tournament at Patterson Field.
Auburn plays Selma at 1 p.m. today.
Rains postpone Dixie district championship games
The champions of the Dixie AAA (9-10) and Dixie Majors (11-12) All-Star District 10 tournaments won’t be decided until today.
Heavy rains in the area Friday postponed both tournaments.

DIXIE ROUNDUP: Beauregard beats Opelika; Opelika Ponytails headed to state
SMITHS STATION — The Beauregard Dixie Youth AAA (9-and-10-year-old) All-Stars continued their run in the District 10 Tournament Tuesday, defeating Opelika American, 6-2.
The loss eliminated Opelika American from the tournament.
Junior golf event has strong first round
The first day of the 38th annual Southern Junior golf tournament at Saugahatchee Country Club was a busy one.
The 96-strong field included some of the top junior golfers in the Southeast. Thirteen golfers shot par or better, including Daniel Glidewell of Opelika and Matthew Barnes of Birmingham, who each shot 3-under 69, the day’s lowest score.
Opelika National hangs on in Dixie Majors district tournament
Opelika National set out to prove it wasn’t ready to go home just yet.
And Sawyer Stephens made that case quickly in an elimination game against Tallassee on Tuesday at West Ridge Park.

DIXIE YOUTH ROUNDUP: Auburn Orange, Blue advance
Auburn Orange defeated Smiths Station, 9-5, on Monday in Opelika. The victory keeps Auburn Orange alive in the Dixie Youth Majors (11-and-12-year-olds) District 10 Tournament.
Auburn Blue also advanced, beating Tallassee, 11-3, in a winner’s bracket game. Auburn Blue will face Beauregard today.
Top junior golfers face off, starting today
An annual tradition returns to Saugahatchee Country Club today and Wednesday.
The 38th annual Southern Junior, for golfers ages 12-19, will tee off at 8 a.m. today for two rounds, featuring some of the best young golfers from around the region.
