DIXIE ALL-STARS: Beulah’s AAAs hold off Dadeville
VALLEY — Every time Beulah looked like it was pulling away from Dadeville in the Dixie AAA (9-10) District 10 Sub-District 3 consolation bracket game at Valley Sportsplex on Monday, Dadeville seemed to have an answer.
Except at the end.
Beulah’s Dalton Thrower worked out of a jam in the sixth, coaxing two straight groundouts to send his team to a 17-16 victory and send Dadeville home.
Dadeville fell behind 9-2 in the second, but used five in the third to cut the deficit to 9-7. Then, after Beulah almost got a run-rule victory with seven in the fourth, Dadeville battled back to make it 16-12 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Beulah tacked on another run in their half of the fifth, but Dadeville again came back, with an Isaiah Hicks RBI groundout cutting the lead to one with Dadeville down to its last out.
Thrower got Dadeville cleanup hitter Landon Hunt to ground out — the only time he was retired Monday — ending the marathon game.
Thrower was also 2-for-4 with four runs for Beulah, which moves on to play the winner of Smiths Station/Opelika National, which was not finished at press time.
Austin Hudmon picked up the win for Beulah and also scored three runs at the plate. Cody Dunn, Colby Boone and Christian Gillespie all scored twice for Beulah, as the top of its order took advantage of some wildness in the Dadeville pitchers. Dunn and Boone were also 2-for-3.
Kyle Atkins was 2-for-3 with three runs for Dadeville, and Hicks scored four times. Hunt was 3-for-4 with a double, Landon Wilson scored twice and Tre Cox had two runs and a home run.
Dadeville and Beulah’s nailbiter made sure Smiths Station and Opelika didn’t start until almost 10 p.m. EST.
Smiths Station led Opelika, 4-1, in the bottom of the third inning at press time.
Opelika went up in the top of the first, with a Henry Smith T RBI single plating T.J. Jones.
Smiths Station answered with three in its half of the first, as Anthony Ward drove in Tyler Cadenhead, and Jonah Herring followed that up with a two-run home run to left-center field.
Smiths scored another in support of starter Garrett Barr in the second, with Cadenhead driving Cody Wilson home.
