DIXIE ROUNDUP: Opelika American AAAs in sub-district final
UNION SPRINGS — Nathan Johnson got it done at the plate and on the pitcher’s mound Monday night as the Opelika American Dixie AAA (9-10) All-Star team beat Russell County, 16-1, in the District 10 Sub-District 2 tournament.
Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI, while earning the win on the mound. Kevin Lazenby was 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI, while Dalton Jenkins was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Opelika American will play Tallassee in the championship game. Opelika will have to win twice, while Tallassee, who is still undefeated in the double-elimination tournament, only has to win once for the sub-district crown. The game will start at 7 p.m. in Union Springs.
Beauregard Angels advance to finals
The Beauregard Dixie Angels (9-10) All-Star softball team beat Alex City, 4-2, on Monday at Felton Little Park in Auburn to advance to the District 5 championship game tonight.
Beauregard will face East Montgomery at 6 p.m., and will have to win twice for the championship, as East Montgomery is undefeated in the double-elimination tournament.
Bailie Barnes earned the win for Beauregard, while Mia Patrick had the lone hit in the win.
Beulah’s 11-12s blank Ladonia
Through two games in the Dixie Youth Major (11-12) District 10 Sub-District 3 All-Star tournament, Beulah has yet to give up a hit.
After no-hitting Valley to open the tournament Friday, Beulah no-hit Ladonia on Monday en route to a 14-0 win.
Dustin Hudmon and Caleb Boone combined for the win.
Cole McClelland was 3-for-3 with a double, while Hudmon and Kyler Fender also hit doubles.
Beulah will play Valley at 6 p.m. tonight in the tournament finale.
Auburn’s 17-19s win
MONTGOMERY — The Auburn Dixie Majors (17-19) beat Southern Montgomery, 10-3, on Monday night in their sub-district tournament.
Scott Norrell earned the win, while Mike Love and Tyler Cofield each had two hits for Auburn. Reid Carter, Drake Sasser, John Gunnels and Ryan Phillips also had hits in the win.
On Sunday, Auburn beat Bellingrath, 18-2. Caleb Cofield was the winning pitcher, throwing all six innings.
Carter had three hits in the win, while Taylor Register and Phillips both had two doubles apiece. Gunnels added two singles.
Auburn’s 15-16s beat Montgomery American
The Auburn Dixie Pre-Majors (15-16) beat Montgomery American 6-5 on Sunday at Lee-Scott Academy.
Jordan Hembrick-Holloman and Tracy Brooks each hit triples, while Neely Boston and Trey Phillips had doubles. Russell Melton had three singles in the win.
Chandler Mulvaney earned the win, throwing six innings, while Norman earned the save, striking out four and giving up no hits in relief.
Phenix City’s 13s wins big
Phenix City’s Dixie Junior Boys (13) beat Smiths Station, 17-5, in five innings at Duck Samford Park on Sunday.
Chad Silvani earned the win for Phenix City, while eight of the nine batters had at least one hit.
For Smiths Station, Jordan McGinnis had two hits.
Opelika’s 13s edge Auburn
The Opelika Dixie Junior Boys (13) beat Auburn, 9-6 on Sunday.
Zack Wood earned the win for Opelika. He also was 3-for-3 at the plate with three doubles. Jordan Brown had two doubles on the night, while Casey Senn, Nick Constan and Garrett Brown added two hits apiece. Ryan Johnson and Brennon Hopper also had hits.
For Auburn, DeMichael Holmes was 2-for-2 with a double.
Opelika National tops Beauregard in 11-12s
In the second round of the District 10 Sub-District 1 Dixie Youth Majors tournament, Opelika National beat Beauregard, 3-0, to advance to the championship game today at 7:30 p.m. at West Ridge Park.
Opelika got on the board in the second inning when Matthew Christian reached on a single. Christian would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gage Keel. Winston Smith T then plated Christian with a single to left.
Smith T would eventually score on a Kent Bugg single. Smith T would then give Opelika its 3-0 advantage in the fifth when he drove in
B.J. White with a single. White reached on a hit to left.
Doss Arnold earned the win for Opelika National, going all six innings, facing a total of 21 batters. He struck out 11, while giving up just four hits and no walks. Those hits came courtesy of Beauregard’s Austin Mitchell, Hank Scott, Walker Meadows and Brandon Knowles.
CORRECTION
In Monday’s Opelika-Auburn News’ Dixie Roundup, the paper misspelled two Valley players. Kylar Cannon was 2-for-3 for Valley in its 14-4 win over Ladonia in the 11-12 Sub-District 3 tournament on Saturday. Padarius Dumas also had a hit.
