DIXIE YOUTH: Beauregard slams Russell County
Beauregard starting pitcher Austin Mitchell worked quickly Friday night.
So did the rest of his team as the Beauregard Dixie Youth Major (11-12) All-Stars beat Russell County, 11-0, in the opening game of the four-team, District 10 Sub-District 1 tournament at West Ridge Park.
Mitchell picked up the win, throwing the first two innings of the four-frame, mercy-rule game, giving up two hits, striking out four and walking none.
Mitchell also helped himself at the plate, driving in the first Beauregard run with a triple in the first inning. He plated Walker Meadows, who reached base on a walk.
In the second, Beauregard put up 10 runs, doing most of the damage with one out.
Kane Garner, who led off with a walk, scored first on a wild pitch. Dylan Smith then doubled in Brandon Knowles, who singled. Then, after an out, Taylor King plated Smith and Heath Senn with a single to right field to make it 5-0.
Cullen Senn then reached on an error, scoring King. After another error off the bat of Hank Scott, Meadows scored Senn with an RBI single to left. Scott and Meadows followed by scoring on back-to-back wild pitches for a 9-0 lead.
Hunter Hillyer put the mercy rule in effect when he scored on an error.
Beauregard added another run in the bottom of the third when Trevor May scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.
Meadows, who relieved Mitchell in the third, retired Russell County in order in the fourth to give Beauregard the win.
Meadows struck out three in his two innings of work, giving up no hits.
Beauregard combined for seven hits in their win and will advance in the winners’ bracket to play Opelika at 7:30 p.m. today.
Russell County and LaFayette will play at 6 tonight in the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
