R.C. Hatch 48, Lanett 43
MONTGOMERY — Missed opportunities and sketchy free-throw shooting ultimately spelled doom for Lanett’s girls.
Clinging to a 3-point lead with under a minute to play, R.C. Hatch turned the ball over to Lanett.
But on the Panthers’ possession to potentially tie things up, Kenyetta Dawson lost control of the ball on a drive and gave it right back to the Bobcats.
That proved to be Lanett’s last chance as R.C. Hatch scored again and the Panthers turned it over once more to allow the Bobcats to get a 48-43 win in the Class 2A Central Region Tournament at the Joe L. Reed Acadome at Alabama State University.
Reeltown 60, Keith 53
MONTGOMERY — “Three more games.”
That was all Reeltown senior Shaina O’Neal could think about after her team defeated Keith on Wednesday in the Class 2A Central Region Tournament at the Joe L. Reed Acadome at Alabama State.
Reeltown used a strong run early in the fourth quarter, and fought off a Keith rally late, to take a 60-53 victory over the Bears.
The Rebels advance to Friday’s Region title game against R.C. Hatch at 3:40 p.m. A win there will send Reeltown to the Final Four in Birmingham for the second consecutive year. The Rebels came up one game short of the state title last season.
“We’re just trying to get back and complete what tried to do last year,” O’Neal said. “We’re taking things one game at a time right now, though.”
R.C. Hatch 76, Lanett 61 (BOYS)
MONTGOMERY — R.C. Hatch showed early and often why it is the defending Class 2A boys state champion and the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
And the Bobcats’ superstar senior Frankie Sullivan showed early and often why he is regarded as one of the state’s top players — and why Auburn University fans are stoked he’s already signed on to play for the Tigers next season.
Behind the play of Sullivan, R.C. Hatch beat Lanett, 76-61, in the Central Region Tournament at the Joe L. Reed Acadome on the campus of Alabama State University on Wednesday.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 16-2 lead and eventually led by as many as 27 points in the win.
“We came in with a gameplan knowing what type of ball player Frankie Sullivan was,” said Lanett head coach Steven Davis. “We wanted to put a lot of pressure on him, but at the same time we didn’t want the other players to have the ball either.
“We had a chance there in the second quarter, but they were able to go another run and then they just kept holding on.”
Sullivan scored 6 early points as the Bobcats built an 8-0 lead, had 13 by halftime and finished with a game-high 26 in the win.
