Eight current and former Auburn swimmers advanced to championship finals Friday night at the Charlottle Ultraswim and the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational.

The meets, which are both part of the USA Swimming Toyota Grand Prix Series, are the final opportunities to qualify for United States Olympic Trials, June 29-July 6 in Omaha, Neb.

Leading the way was former Tiger Eric Shanteau, as he won the 100m breaststroke in Omaha with a time of 2:12.18. His former teammate and Olympian Mark Gangloff followed in third with a time of 2:15.18.

The top finish among the women came from Olympian and Huntsville native Margaret Hoelzer as she touched in with a time of 55.53 in the 100m freestyle, placing second in the race.

Also making finals at the Omaha Swimvitational were Abby MacGregor and Maggie Bird. MacGregor placed sixth in the 200m breast with a time of 2:34.75, while Bird came in fourth in the 400m freestyle with a 4:16.14.

Across the country in Charlotte, N.C., rising sophomore Ava Ohlgren was blazing the way for Auburn – qualifying for three finals during the session.

Her best finish came in the 100m breaststroke, as she finished fourth with an Olympic Trials-qualifying time of 1:11.29. She also came in fifth in the 200m freestyle with a Trials-qualifying 2:01.43, trailing fourth-place Emily Kukors and her time of 2:00.76.

Ohlgren made her third final of the day as she placed eighth in the 100m butterfly preliminary with a time of 1:01.54, but opted not to advance to the finals session.

Also competing in the 100m fly in Charlotte was rising junior Tyler McGill, as he came in fourth with a time of 53.64.
