Auburn picks up commitment from defensive back

Fort Valley, Ga., cornerback Reggie Taylor verbally committed to AU on Tuesday.

Auburn’s remarkable early haul of verbal commitments for the 2009 recruiting class features a little bit of everything.

There are big names and under-the-radar sleepers, speedy wide receivers and hulking linemen, with hometowns spanning from North Florida to East Texas.

But until Tuesday, the class was missing one thing: A single defensive back.

Fort Valley, Ga., cornerback Reggie Taylor has changed that. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound Taylor verbally committed to AU on Tuesday.

Taylor, like many of Auburn’s other commitments, participated in the Tigers’ Senior Camp on June 14-15. His performance in the camp impressed Auburn’s coaches — including defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads — enough to earn him a scholarship offer.

“When I went to camp they said they liked my footwork and how aggressive I played,” Taylor told Auburnsports.com. “It was great working with Coach Rhoads. He loved me and I loved him.

“I did real good and showed them how hard I could work. He told me I had the speed and aggressiveness to play cornerback at Auburn.”

Taylor chose AU over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Memphis and Ball State.

Taylor attends Fort Valley’s Peach County High, the alma mater of current AU wide receiver Chris Slaughter.
