MONTGOMERY — Even a tornado warning couldn’t slow down Loachapoka’s boys in their Class 1A Central Region semifinal win over Holy Spirit.
That’s because, when the Indians got going in their 68-48 win, they were like a force of nature themselves.
Loachapoka (19-8) went on a mammoth, 30-3 run in just under 10 minutes from the first through third quarters, turning a tie game into a laugher.
When the Titans (19-11) finally slowed the Indians down, they were in a 38-11 hole at the beginning of the third quarter.
All five of Loachapoka’s starters combined for those 30 points.
“We just worked as a team,” said Jontavius Willis, who finished with 8 points and six rebounds.
The Indians’ spurt was bisected by a 31-minute delay for a tornado warning, which started with 4:09 to go in the first half and Loachapoka leading by 14.
The Indians picked up where they left off when they came back out of their locker room to resume play, breezing to a 13-0 run in the next five minutes.
“We were worried about that,” Indians coach Terry Murph said. “We had the momentum, and we were worried that we might lose it. But we played even better.”
Loachapoka’s post men, Tommie White and Marvin Hunter, dominated the smaller Titans, helping the Indians to a 45-19 rebounding advantage.
White finished with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Hunter added 9 points and eight boards. Ten of the 12 Indians players that saw time scored at least 2 points.
“We tried to get the whole team involved, so everybody would be feeling the same thing,” White said.
The Indians will play Talladega County-Central on Friday night at 5:20 p.m.
