Opelika’s Josh Rowe has committed to play football at Georgia Southern University next season.
The 6-foot, 195-pound linebacker settled on the Eagles this past weekend. He said he was also weighing offers from Memphis, UAB, The Citadel and Samford.
“It was a hard decision, but I prayed about it and came to a decision,” Rowe said. “It’s where I want to be.”
Rowe, who was first-team All-State as a junior and honorable mention All-State last season, said his visit to Georgia Southern’s campus in Statesboro impressed him.
“It was beautiful, bigger than Auburn’s,” Rowe said. “I felt like the coaches really, really wanted me. I felt like the players wanted me to be there. I feel like I can make a difference right away.”
Rowe, a member of the Opelika-Auburn News’ Super 8 before last season, recorded 97 tackles through the Bulldogs’ first-round playoff win over Stanhope Elmore and was named to the News’ All-Area team.
Rowe is the second Opelika player in two years to commit to the FCS (formerly I-AA) Eagles, following defensive back K.R. Snipes to Statesboro.
“I’m going to get an opportunity to start my freshman year,” Rowe said. “And if I don’t get to start, I’ll get a lot of playing time. I’m not going to have to redshirt.”
