Auburn High didn’t have to look far to find a replacement for longtime athletic director Chuck Furlow.
Just down the halls of the high school, in fact.
Assistant principal Clay McCall, a former AHS assistant football coach, was named the new athletic director at the Jan. 13 board meeting.
He will assume his new role July 1.
“I’m really excited to take this position,” McCall said. “We’ve got a great group of coaches that I’m really looking forward to working with. And I’m looking forward to working with all the principals in the Auburn City Schools System, including Dr. Cathy Long here at Auburn High School, Dr. Jason Wright at Auburn Junior High School and Mrs. Debra Beebe at Drake Middle School.
“I feel really blessed to take this role on.”
McCall’s coaching career began in 1990 at Lee County High School in Leesburg, Ga. He then spent seven years as an assistant at Auburn High under his father, Bill McCall. After a two-year stint as head coach and athletic director at Plainview High School, McCall returned to AHS as assistant principal.
“Once you’re a coach it kind of gets in your blood,” McCall said. “I’ve missed coaching to an extent. It’s a tremendous opportunity for me to get back in the athletic world, yet still be in the administrative world and be at a place like Auburn High School. I feel tremendously blessed to serve in this capacity.”
Furlow was happy with his successor.
“I think it’s a great choice,” Furlow said. “He’s been a head football coach — an athletic director. He knows our coaches, our coaches know him. He knows how the Auburn City School System and our athletic programs work.
“He has more integrity than anyone you’ll find. He can make a decision. His people skills are good. I think he’s going to do an excellent job. We had several people here that could’ve done the job and no one was disappointed with the choice.”
And McCall said having Furlow around in the coming months could only help him transition into his new role.
“I’m taking time for Coach and I to get together on and off as I can, while still performing my current role,” he said. “I’m just trying to look at some different things and see what could be on the rise and what I can bring.
“Coach Furlow can be a really good asset on this and I’m blessed to have him.”
