SMITHS STATION — In front of a rowdy home crowd and with Lee-Scott minus a Maddox, Glenwood’s girls undid the damage of a 17-point loss it suffered just 17 days ago.
The Gators, ranked No. 7 in the AISA, upset the top-ranked Warriors, 43-40, on Friday night, handing their rivals only their second loss of the season.
Lee-Scott scored a 50-33 home win over Glenwood on Jan 13.
“This maintains our record of never allowing Lee-Scott’s girls to ever win at Glenwood’s gym,” Glenwood coach Tim Mayse said. “In this rivalry, the home team tends to play really well.”
The Warriors (23-2) had to do without one of their top scorers, Olivia Maddox, who sat out the game with a right knee injury. Lee-Scott boys’ and girls’ coach Chad Prewett said he thought it might have been a meniscus or MCL injury, but it turned out to be less severe and she should be ready for the region tournament at Huntingdon College next Thursday through Saturday.
As if missing one Maddox wasn’t enough, Olivia’s sister, Melissa, picked up her third foul with 3:27 to go in the first quarter and sat out the rest of the half.
The Gators (15-8) held the Warriors to 1 point in the second quarter with Maddox on the bench and Jessie Washington having an off night, taking an 18-14 lead into halftime. Washington finished with 11 points on 2-of-17 shooting.
Maddox returned in the third quarter, scoring all 10 of Lee-Scott’s points, and finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. But Glenwood was able to hold off all of the Warriors’ challenges.
“A lot of things went wrong, but you’ve got to give Glenwood credit,” Prewett said. “Any time you come over here, it’s going to be a hard place to win. Hopefully we can learn from this.”
Bree Nowlin led the Gators with 18 points and six steals. Mandy Marritt added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Halston Young scored 10.
Lee-Scott’s boys, ranked No. 2 in the AISA, used a suffocating full-court press to force 26 turnovers and survived a late run from the Gators to escape with a 67-58 win.
The Warriors (21-4) led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter, but started getting sloppy with the ball and let the Gators back into the game.
“Our full-court pressure is the catalyst for what we try to do — we try to keep that up for 32 minutes,” Prewett said. “We had a big lead we were trying to protect and we probably went to protect it a little bit early.”
Alex Layson led the Warriors with 13 points, while Garrett Dyas added 12 and five steals.
Dudley Taylor scored 15 for the Gators, and Deante Thomas put in 11.
