JUNIOR GOLF: McDonald sets pace in SJGT's 1st round

Wilson McDonald of Mobile fired a first-round 68 to take the first-round lead of the 2009 SJGT Match Play Championship, which is being held on the par-72 Lake Course at RTJ Trail’s Grand National in Opelika.

The event, which is in its fourth year, features two rounds of stroke play where the low 32 scores advance to single-elimination match play.

McDonald, who carded six birdies during his round, has a one-shot lead over Opelika’s Rylan Yacko, who had 69. John Edge of
Atlanta is in third with a 70, while last year’s co-medalist from stroke play William Sellers of Montgomery is in fourth with a 71.

Auburn’s Jared Bettcher rounds out the top five with a 72.

The final round of stroke play concludes today at Grand National with tee times starting at 7 a.m. The first round of match play will be
Wednesday with the second round that afternoon. The third and fourth rounds are Thursday with the championship match taking place Friday morning.
