Wilson McDonald of Mobile carded a final-round 72 on Tuesday afternoon to earn medalist honors after the stroke play portion of the 2009 SJGT Match Play Championship, which is being held at the par-72 Lake Course at the RTJ Trail’s Grand National in Opelika.
McDonald opened the event with a 68 on Monday, and finished with a 4-under-par 140 total to earn the No. 1 seed in the match-play event.
Jacob Harper of Beulah finished second with a 73-70 — 143, while Birmingham’s Matthew Belling was third with a 73-71 — 144.
Opelika’s Rylan Yacko took fourth with a 69-76 — 145, as John Edge (70-76 — 146) of Atlanta, Kyle Thommesen (75-71 — 146) of
Auburn and William Sellers (71-75 — 146) of Montgomery all finished tied for fifth.
The first round match play matches will begin at 7 a.m. today off the first tee on the Lake Course. The second round will follow this afternoon with the third and fourth rounds being conducted Thursday.
The championship match will take place Friday morning.
