It was a day of upsets as the match play portion of the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour Match Play Championship got under way Wednesday at Grand National.
Only two of the top eight seeds remain, as well as only three of the top ten.
Top-seeded Wilson McDonald of Mobile is still alive after beating Andrew Vanstratum, 5 & 3, in the first round and Phillip Brol, 1-up, in the second round.
He will face ninth-seeded Joe Maziar of Atlanta in the quarterfinals today at 7:08 a.m. Maziar defeated Andrew Hans of Birmingham in the first round and Jared Bettcher of Auburn in the second.
The other quarterfinal pairings are 12th-seeded Matthew McLeod of Opelika taking on 29th-seeded Ruston Smith of Northport at 7 a.m. McLeod defeated Thomas Looney of Scottsboro, 1-up, in the first round Wednesday and then topped Jackson Byars of Troy, 3 & 2, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Fifteenth-seeded Ted Moon of Lilburn, Ga., will tee off against 23rd-seeded Bryan Fox of Roswell, Ga., at 7:16. Moon got past Beulah’s Jacob Harper, the second seed in the tournament, in a 21-hole marathon in the second round.
Sixth-seeded William Sellers of Montgomery will take on 19th-seeded Justin Cho of Norcross, Ga., in the final quarterfinal pairing at 7:24.
When all four quarterfinal pairings are completed, the winners will square off in the semifinal round in the afternoon.
The winners of the semifinals will meet in the finals Friday.
