Former Auburn offensive lineman Chaz Ramsey is suing former offensive line coach Hugh Nall and former athletic trainer Arnold Gamber over an injury that the lawsuit claims ended Ramsey’s college career, The Birmingham News’ reported on its Web site, al.com, Thursday afternoon.
Ramsey, from Madison, Miss., started 10 games at right guard as a true freshman for the Tigers in 2007.
He had back surgery before the 2008 season, and was released from his scholarship last September.
Both Nall and Gamber were not retained by Auburn University after former coach Tommy Tuberville’s resignation.
The Birmingham News said the suit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Birmingham, seeks “compensatory or punitive damages” against the two former Auburn employees for “pain and anguish” and “the denial of a very probable career in the NFL.”
The suit does not list a monetary figure.
“I haven’t seen the lawsuit and I don’t know the details of it, but I’m proud of my 24-year career, so this comes as a real surprise,” Nall, who said he was advised not to comment on the specifics of the case, told the Birmingham News. “I’m proud of the young men that I coached. This is the first thing like this in my 24 years.”
Attorney Steve Heninger said on WJOX on Thursday that the suit is against only Nall and Gamber, not Auburn University.
Heninger told WJOX that Ramsey suffered a career-ending back injury after his surgery because Nall and Gamber forced him to do training against the orders of Ramsey’s doctor.
And when Ramsey and his father stood up to Nall, Heninger told WJOX, Nall kicked him off the team.
“Coach Nall said, ‘Well then you are kicked off,’” Heninger told WJOX. “He got the team together and told them, ‘Stay away from Chaz Ramsey. He’s not a man.’”
The Birmingham News said the suit claims Nall and Gamber “negligently caused or negligently allowed Plaintiff to be exposed to increased injury.”
Heninger told WJOX he expects the suit to come to trial “at this time next year.”
