MONTGOMERY — Opelika split two games Friday in the Dixie Majors (11-12) Sub-State tournament, leaving them needing a win to make it to state.
Opelika topped Wilcox County, 9-2, in its first game Friday, led by two hits apiece from Chase Hegwood, Gage Keel and Berry Dudley. Keel also had a double.
Hegwood got the win on the mound, and Bennett Whitman, Gage Young and B.J. White all had a hit.
East Montgomery won a pitchers’ duel, 2-1, in Opelika’s second game Friday.
Young had two hits to lead Opelika, and Matthew Christian, Brandon Waido and Dudley all had a hit.
Doss Arnold took the loss on the mound.
Opelika will face Luverne today at 11 a.m. at East Montgomery. If they win, they get the No. 2 seed in the state tournament.
If Opelika loses and White Plains loses to East Montgomery, Opelika will meet White Plains at 3 p.m., with the winner getting the No. 3 seed in the state tournament.
