The City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarbrough Tennis Center hosted the Alabama State Junior Team Tennis Championship this past weekend, with 269 junior tennis players competing in the event.
Teams were divided into three age groups: 12 and under, 14 and under and 15-18 with beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions. The Auburn Cross Court Team won the 18-and-under intermediate division and qualified for the 2009 USTA League Tennis Southern Sectional Championships to be held Aug. 21-23 in Mobile. This is the first USTA Junior Team Tennis state championship for an Auburn team.
Auburn was undefeated in pool play and advanced to the championship match where they defeated Pelham by a score of 40-19. Maggie Jerome won the girls’ singles match 8-5. Kevin Xu won the boys’ singles match 8-3. Carl Fox and Marc Delorenzo won the boys’ doubles match 8-5. Mallory Carroll and Michaela Robinson won the girls’ doubles match 8-6. Jerome and Xu won the mixed doubles match 8-0.
Other teams advancing to Sectionals include: The Pell City Slammers 12-and-under intermediate, Mobile Murphy 12-and-under advanced, Pelham Aces 14-and-under intermediate, Mobile Cunningham 14-and-under advanced and Mobile Perry 18-and-under advanced.
