Brandon Jacobs may not be on his way to the big leagues after all.
Or maybe he’s just posturing for more money. Either way, the Auburn signee’s decision has yet to be finalized.
Jacobs, a running back/linebacker from Lilburn, Ga., told multiple media outlets Wednesday that he would follow the money and sign with the Boston Red Sox, who drafted the outfielder in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
“I’m pretty excited about it,” Jacobs told AuburnSports.com. “I based the decision on the money. Being offered that much is hard to turn down, especially from a great team like the Red Sox.”
On Friday, Jacobs, in an e-mail to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, said he still considers himself an Auburn signee and has yet to sign a contract.
“As of now, I am still committed to Auburn University until there is an agreement made with the Boston Red Sox,” Jacobs wrote. “As you know, all players must give a final number value before anything is done and then the organization needs to negotiate the numbers before signing. We are in the middle of negotiating with the Boston Red Sox at this time.
“If we are [fortunate] to make an agreement with the Boston Red Sox, I will make my final decision at that point.
“Brandon Jacobs”
Jacobs told AuburnSports.com that he expected to receive between $500,000 and $800,000, the typical range for a second-round selection.
