Auburn and Jacksonville State are set to play each other at Jordan-Hare Stadium sometime in the near future, according to a report in Friday’s Anniston Star.
The game will likely be played in 2012 or 2013.
“The game is not set, but I told them that we would like to play them,” Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs told the paper. “We’ve agreed, handshake, verbal, whatever it is — my word is my bond — that we’re going to play. It’s just a matter of us getting our schedule from the SEC after 2012.”
The Tigers’ 2010 non-conference schedule is full and 2011’s already has games at Clemson and home against Samford on the docket. Auburn does not have any games officially booked for 2012 and 2013.
Jacksonville State is a member of the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. The Tigers have tended to schedule one game against an FCS opponent per season since games against those foes began counting toward the six victories that are required to make a bowl.
Auburn faced Tennessee Tech and Tennessee-Martin — members of JSU’s conference, the Ohio Valley Conference — the past two seasons and will host Furman this year. Chattanooga is on the schedule for 2010 and Samford for 2011.
Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe was Auburn’s offensive coordinator under Pat Dye from 1982-85. Jacobs was an offensive lineman at Auburn in 1982 and 1983.
