Some of the best senior golfers in the country came to play the Auburn University Club this week as part of the Society of Seniors Tour, but it was a local who ended up taking home first place in the 55-64-year-old division.
David Stanfield of Auburn shot a 6-under-par 66 in Wednesday’s final round to win the Legendary Senior Amateur Classic’s Senior
Division with a two-day score of 139 (73-66).
Bob Hullender won the Super Senior Division (65 and older) in a playoff over Spencer Sappington, who shot a final round 7-under 65.
Hullender fired a 66 on Wednesday to win the low medalist for the entire tournament with a two-day score of 134 (68-66).
The event was originally scheduled to be three rounds, but Tuesday’s second round was rained out, so golfers had to settle for just 36 holes.
“Being a former (PGA) Tour player, I was impressed by the scores out here this week,” AU Club’s Director of Operations Jimmy Green said. “These guys are really good. The golf course was in fabulous shape and these guys played it well.”
Frank Dial of Auburn finished 18th overall, shooting a 150 (76-74).
Bob Dumas, also of Auburn, withdrew from play Wednesday and didn’t finish. His first-round score of 74 was good enough to put him in a tie for eighth place heading into the final round.
