LANETT — Springwood went up early on Escambia in its first home playoff game since 2001, but suffered two key injuries and couldn’t recover in a 46-38 loss that ended the Wildcats’ season Friday night.
A 5-yard run from Keon Brown and a 12-yard pass from Trevor McCullough for Mick Burdette put Springwood (7-4) up 14-0 early in the second quarter, but an Escambia player roughed kicker Taylor Coleman on the extra point and broke his leg.
The Wildcats, who had suspect depth to begin with, also lost one of their linemen in the first half.
“We just couldn’t get (the players) up after that,” coach Ronnie Sikes said.
Springwood scored on a 66-yard halfback pass from Brown to Monte Booker to go ahead, 22-14, at the half, but 18 third-quarter points helped the Cougars (7-5) pull away.
Wesley Wilis scored on two 3-yard runs in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 8, but the Wildcats couldn’t get any closer.
Brown rushed for 140 yards on the night — giving him 1034 on the year — as Springwood gained 251 yards on the ground and 142 through the air.
