Seven area girls basketball teams are starting their seasons at the James Hardy Classic Tip-Off Tournament at Lanett, which starts today and runs through Saturday.
Lanett. Edward Bell, Dadeville, Auburn, LaFayette, Loachapoka and Valley will all participate in the tournament.
The host Panthers, who finished 22-8 last season and lost in the Central regional tournament, lost leading rebounder Cortney Sims, but return their leading scorer, senior Shamiya Hicks (15 ppg), senior Jasmine Dawson, who led the team in assists (8 apg) and sophomore Jabrea Stiggers, who led them in steals.
Auburn, which lost in the sub-regional round last year, lost their two leading scorers, Tarnesha Stephens and Olivia Cook.
Loachapoka, which also lost in sub-regionals, returns senior Chantal Hall, who averaged 23 points, 14 rebounds and six steals per game last year.
Loachapoka and Valley play at 3 p.m., with Edward Bell and Dadeville (4:15), Auburn and LaFayette (5:30), and Lanett and Handley (6:15) following.
The second round and the first round of the consolation bracket will be played Thursday afternoon, with the consolation finals and championship being played Saturday.
