ATHENS, Ga. — It started out as one of the best games of his college career.
It ended, perhaps, as one of the worst.
Auburn senior quarterback Chris Todd started Saturday’s game against Georgia where he left off last week against Furman, completing the first nine passes he attempted for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
It put the Tigers up 14-0 over the Bulldogs and in the driver’s seat of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.
But then the second quarter came, and Auburn’s offense hit a wall. Todd finished the last three quarters 11-for-19 for 121 yards, but with that came two interceptions and three sacks.
“We really had some momentum going,” Todd said of the first quarter. “If we had had one more there in the second (quarter), it probably would have given us some more momentum, but still, we had a lot going for us there. We just really needed to keep it going. We were really close on that.”
Todd’s final pass of the night, which if completed would have most likely sent the game into overtime, was too long.
If he would have connected, Todd would have tied Auburn’s single-season mark for most touchdown passes.
Instead, he sits at 19, one behind Pat Sullivan (1971) and Jason Campbell’s (2004) single-season record of 20, with the Iron Bowl left to play.
Todd also moved into the Auburn top 10 for career TD passes, tying for ninth with Jeff Burger (1984-87) with 24.
Before the second quarter at Sanford Stadium, Todd had only thrown three incomplete passes in three quarters of play.
During the first half of Auburn’s homecoming win over Furman last Saturday, Todd completed his first 14 passes and finished the half 17-for-18 for 256 and four touchdowns. He didn’t play the second half.
In the past two starts, Todd is 37-for-46 for 494 yards and six touchdowns. His two interceptions Saturday put him at five for the season.
In Auburn’s four losses, Todd has thrown for just two touchdowns and four INTs. In Auburn’s seven wins, he’s thrown for 17 touchdowns against one interception.
