MONTGOMERY — Lee-Scott’s boys and girls basketball teams both won the championship at the Evangel Christian Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday, with the top-ranked girls beating Prattville Christian, 38-31, and the No. 5 boys beating the hosts, 52-51, on a MarQuen Mitchell layup with 5 seconds to play.
Melissa Maddox led the girls team (5-0) with 17 points and earned tournament MVP honors. Breanne DeBaets added 7 and was named to the all-tournament team.
Mitchell scored 13 points for the boys (4-1), and was named tournament MVP. Gunter led the Warriors with 15 points against Evangel, Taylor Turner added 9 points and 10 rebounds, and Micah Pointer had 8 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams return to action next Friday, when they return to Montgomery to take on Tuscaloosa Academy at Huntingdon College.
Auburn High sweeps Beauregard
Auburn’s boys and girls basketball teams swept Beauregard at home Tuesday night, with the girls winning, 54-45, and the boys taking a 49-25 win over the Hornets.
Kierra Scott led the Tigers’ girls (3-2) with 22 points, and Abby Jones added 8, while Valeeta Bellamy led Beauregard (1-2) with 19.
In the boys game, A.J. Jackson led Auburn (2-0) with 12 and Michael Willis scored 10, while Rodney Thomas led the Hornets (2-1) with a game-high 15.
Auburn’s B-team boys also won, 55-29, led by Corey Hall’s 17 points.
Cole Stockton scored 15 for the Tigers (2-0) and Ryan Langford added 10.
The Tigers’ varsity boys travel to the Sneaky Pete’s Rebels Classic in Vestavia Hills today, where they will open with Shades Valley at 5 p.m.
Opelika sweeps Wetumpka
WETUMPKA — The Bulldogs’ boys and girls basketball team took road wins over the Indians on Tuesday, with the girls winning, 70-39, and the boys, 65-52.
Gabby Clifton and Kayla Whatley each scored 18 for Opelika’s girls (5-1).
Jacoby Payne and Montrez Hunter each recorded double-doubles for the Bulldogs’ boys, with Payne scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Hunter had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jamarius Blunt added 14 points for Opelika (3-0).
The Bulldogs’ JV boys basketball team also beat the Indians, 70-58, to maintain a perfect start to its season.
T.J. Presley led Opelika with 17 points, and Jamarlo Alford chipped in 15 for the Bulldogs (3-0).
Both teams return to action Tuesday at Jeff Davis.
Glenwood sweeps Lakeside
PHENIX CITY — Double-doubles from Bree Nowlin and Mandy Marriott spurred the newly minted No. 4 Gators girls basketball team to a 62-47 home win over Lakeside on Tuesday.
Nowlin netted 32 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Marriott had 17 points and 11 boards.
Carley Adams (7), Halston Young (5) and Karlie Franklin (1) rounded out the scoring for Glenwood (2-0).
The Gators’ boys team got its win of the season after the girls game, beating the Chiefs, 75-37.
Dalton Dempsey led Glenwood (1-2) with 19 points, Chris Woods scored 13, Will Prickett had 8, and Devan Kelly, Tyler Brown and Brandon Locke each added 6.
Both teams return to action Tuesday when they host Calvary Christian (Ga.), with the girls playing at 5:30 and the boys following.
Tallassee splits with Notasulga
TALLASSEE — The Tigers’ girls team posted its first win over the Blue Devils in almost a decade Tuesday, 64-53, before poor free-throw shooting doomed Tallassee in a 52-45 loss in the boys game.
Ciara Rose led Tallassee’s girls (2-2) with 19 points — including 14 in the second half — Kelly Sanders scored 12 and Eboni Rogers added 10.
Kimesha Jackson scored 17 and Natasha Williams netted 15 for Notasulga (0-5).
Frederick McKenzie’s 24 points led the Blue Devils’ boys (1-4) to their first win of the season, and Nicholas Nettles added 14.
O’Daleious Daniel scored 14 and Vandale Daniel and Desiev Martin each added 8 for Tallassee (1-1), which shot 5-of-22 from the free-throw line.
Notasulga also beat Tallassee, 44-26, in the B-team game, with Keon Gordon’s 9 points leading the Tigers.
Tallassee returns to action Tuesday with its first area game at Valley. The B-team starts at 4 p.m., with the girls and boys to follow.
Opelika 7th and 8th graders win
The Opelika Middle School eighth grade boys basketball defeated Beauregard, 46-31, on Tuesday.
Shontrez Tolbert and Aldreecous Wilson lead the way with 10 points while Kenneth Keith had 9 points. Malcolm Buggs had five assists and Jakell Mitchell added seven rebounds. The win moves the boys team to 4-0 on the year.
The eighth graders beat Russell County, 47-30, the night before, with Keith socring 11 points and Buggs scoring 8 and recording four assists. Jakell Mitchell and Hykeem Graham each had six rebounds.
The Opelika seventh graders also beat Russell County on Monday, 44-36. Wesley Dowdell led the Bulldogs with 15 points and Winston Smith T had 13. T.J. Hamby added seven rebounds and A.J. Butler added six assists. It was coach Craig Montel’s first win as a head coach.
Beulah junior high boys beat Woodland
WOODLAND — Caleb Boone and Davis Lamb had big nights for the Bobcats’ junior high boys team in a 43-29 road win over Woodland on Tuesday.
Boone led Beulah with 15 points, while Lamb had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Trevon Brown added 9 for the Bobcats (3-2).
Beulah hosts Wadley on Monday.
