PHENIX CITY — Will Garner tried to beat the referees. Although they filled up more of the stat page than the players, the senior running back from Lee-Scott still led his team to a 33-7 victory against winless Glenwood on Friday.
Garner rushed 12 times for 86 yards and two touchdowns, which didn’t take up as much room as 20 penalties for 235 yards the referees called on both teams.
“That was sloppy,” Garner said. “I ran through the wrong hole sometimes and the line blocked the wrong people sometimes. We need to fix those mistakes before next week.“
Warriors coach Robert Maddox said the final score was the only thing positive for his 5-3 squad. Lee-Scott is 3-1 in AISA AAA Region I.
“That was sloppy, penalty-ridden and we can’t win football games like that,” he said.
The Warriors held a 6-0 lead late in the second quarter after Garner scored on 29-yard run on the game’s opening drive. Michael Jensen missed the extra point.
The Gators (0-9, 0-5) couldn’t get much going offensively.
Although its defense forced four fumbles and recovered three, Glenwood failed to score until 2:04 left in the game.
A 3-yard touchdown pass from freshman Brandon Daley to Will Prickett came just in time to avoid the shutout.
Daley finished the game 6-of-19 with two interceptions and one touchdown.
The Gators had just three plays gain more than 10 yards. Every time they gained some momentum after a turnover, the referees called a penalty on the ensuing play.
Glenwood committed 14 penalties for 160 yards, eight of those fouls were unsportsmanlike or personal fouls.
The referees also called a chop block foul on Glenwood’s defense.
“They told us he went in low with an attempt to hurt the Lee-Scott ball carrier,” said Glenwood coach Chris Holmes. “I didn’t know it was illegal to try and tackle someone other than by grabbing their facemask or horse collar.“
Gators assistant coach Josh McConnell was kicked out of the game for arguing against the call.
“He (McConnell) was running his mouth and expressed his opinion,” Holmes said. “The referee didn’t like what he said and decided to throw him out.”
The referees also kicked out Gators senior Elliot Lynn after he committed an unsportsmanlike penalty.
He tangled up with a Lee-Scott player trying to make a tackle, but he took the player down hard out of bounds. The flag came out straight away.
While the Gators have a bye next week, Lee-Scott hosts Fort Dale.
