AU ROUNDUP: Volleyball's Bullock honored by SEC

Outside hitter Sarah Bullock was named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week for the first time of her career after leading the squad to a 2-0 record this weekend in conference play.

“This was a long time coming for Sarah,” AU head coach Wade Benson said. “She has been such a steady player for us and is really the backbone of this team. It is a well-deserved honor.”

Bullock, the Allen, Texas, native, led the squad in kills against Mississippi State, having 12 kills. That mark is the tenth time this season she has recorded double-digit kills. Her overall attack percentage of .292 was third-best on the team for the weekend.
Bullock’s 21 total kills on the weekend gave her 199 kills on the year, the most on the team.

“I’m really happy and honored to get the award,” Bullock said. “I played very solid this weekend and am extremely excited.”

Bullock’s weekly award marks the fourth time this season that a Tiger has been honored by the SEC. Classmate Katherine Culwell has earned two Freshman of the Week honors and junior Liz Crouch was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 21.

The Tigers take to the road and head to Athens, Ga., for a mid-week SEC match against Georgia at 6 p.m. today. Auburn then travels to Baton Rouge, La., for a Sunday match at LSU on Nov. 1. Match time is set for 1 p.m.

Soccer’s Howell earns another nod
Rebecca Howell added to her national accolades on Tuesday as she was named to the Soccer America Women’s Team of the Week.

This is the third national recognition of the week for Howell, who was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer and was placed on the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week on Monday.

Howell collected a pair of game-winning goals on the weekend as Auburn earned its’ first-ever win over Tennessee in Knoxville and then knocked off No. 19 Georgia with a pair of unassisted goals.

Her career goals total now stands at 21, which is seventh all-time at Auburn, and her 63 points are also seventh.

Auburn closes out its regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. at Alabama. Currently sixth in the conference standings, Auburn can finish as high as fourth.

Men’s golf finishes 9th
BATON ROUGE, La. — The Auburn men’s golf team (282-864) carded a 2-under final round Tuesday to place ninth at the David Toms Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Louisiana.

Sophomore Kyle Kopsick (70-214) led the Tigers in a tie for 21st followed by senior Cole Moreland (69-215) tied for 24th, sophomore
John Stembridge (71-218) tied for 38th, sophomore Will McCurdy (73-220) tied for 45th and reshirt freshman David Zickler (76-221) tied for 52nd.

The Tigers fired the third-lowest team round on the day to jump three spots into the top-10.

Moreland fired the lowest round on the day for the Tigers, a 2-under 69. The Austin, Texas native started the day on No. 13 with a shotgun start. Moreland was at 1-over with just three holes remaining before putting together three-consecutive birdies on holes 10
through 12.

Tournament host LSU (286-844) led wire-to-wire, claiming the team title followed by Kent State (284-845). Rice’s Jade Scott (65-204) claimed the individual title followed by LSU’s John Peterson (73-205) in second.

The David Toms concluded the Tigers’ fall schedule. Auburn men’s golf will return to action Feb. 15 at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston.
