The Auburn volleyball team battled, but dropped a five-set match to Jacksonville State, 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 25-17, 21-25, 9-15), on Tuesday evening at the Student Activities Center.
“It was a good match and Jacksonville State is a good team,” Wade Benson, head volleyball coach, said. “We’re still not where we need to be, but we’re coming along and you could see in games two and three that we have the upside to defeat a good team.”
Junior Alyssa Davis led the Tigers with a career-best 13 kills on 17 attacks and two errors for a .647 attack percentage. Freshman Sarah
Bullock and sophomore Kelly Fidero each finished with 11 kills, while junior Liz Crouch had 14 digs.
Next, the Tigers (5-3) head to Statesboro, Ga., for the Bash in the Boro tournament hosted by Georgia Southern this weekend.
Women’s golf takes 2nd at match play
Despite leading for most of the match, the No. 4-ranked Auburn women’s golf team could not hold on at the end, falling to No. 9 LSU, 3-1-1, in the championship match of the 2009 Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship.
The lone victory of the day for Auburn came from No. 3 seed Patricia Sanz as she defeated Jaqueline Hedwall, 2-and-1. Junior Cydney Clanton played to a tie in her match while Candace Schepperle, Carlie Yadloczky and Haley Wilson took losses in each of theirs.
The Auburn women’s golf team will take the week off before returning to action at the Mason Rudolph Championship, Sept. 25-27.
