WSFA TV in Montgomery presented Auburn High quarterback Calvin Jenkins with its “Friday Night Fever Star Athlete of the Year” award in a ceremony Thursday night.
The award, which was presented in tandem with Hardee’s, was chosen from a pool of the station’s 12 player of the week award winners during the season.
Jenkins, a South Alabama signee, was an honorable mention All-State quarterback and was named the Opelika-Auburn News’ Offensive Player of the Year two years in a row.
The senior led the Tigers to a 33-5 record in three years as a starter, and had 1,601 passing yards and 18 touchdowns to go along with 900 rushing yards and 14 scores as Auburn advanced to the state semifinals this past year.
3 area wrestlers through to semifinals
HUNTSVILLE — Opelika’s Brian White (103 pounds), Auburn High’s Michael Jordan and Smiths Station’s Anthony Green (both 112) all went undefeated in the first day of the Class 6A state wrestling tournament Thursday, advancing to today’s semifinals.
White won by two pins, Jordan won by a pin and a major decision, and Green won by a major decision and a 9-3 score.
Fourteen other area wrestlers are still alive in the consolation bracket.
Opelika (22 points) sits in 14th after Day 1, Auburn (18) is in 18th, Smiths Station (15) is in 22nd, and Central (6) is in 25th.
Smiths Station edges Valley
SMITHS STATION — The Panthers’ girls tennis team took a 5-4 win over the Rams on Thursday.
Jessica Adams picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3 singles, Lindsey McElwee won 8-0 at No. 4, and Kaycee Gabler took an 8-2 win at No. 5.
The doubles teams of Adams and Gabler (8-1) and Hannah Walker and Jessica Wheeler (8-3) also took wins for the Panthers.
Auburn JV soccer rips Russell County
Rohan Gupta and Andrew Carter each scored two goals to lead the Tigers to a 10-0 win over the Warriors.
Christian Reyes, Draw Jahera, Foster Denney, Killian Delmore and Krist Baharani also scored goals for Auburn, while defender Joshua Connelly and goalie Chad Smith helped hold Russell County scoreless.
