Troy offensive coordinator Neal Brown is interviewing with Texas Tech for the same position, Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said Monday.
Brown just completed his fourth year on Troy’s staff and second year as offensive coordinator. Former Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville was introduced as the Red Raiders’ new head coach Sunday and sought out Brown at the American Football Coaches Association coaches’ convention, Blakeney said.
“Neal called and told me he had been contacted by a representative of Texas Tech and they wanted to talk to him,” Blakeney said. “That’s all I know at this point. There’s certainly issues Neal will have to sort through. Other than that, I’m sorta helpless.”
Issues Brown would have to sort through include working for the head coach who fired one of his coaching mentors, Tony Franklin, in 2008. Franklin, Troy’s offensive coordinator from 2006-07, was hired by Tuberville at Auburn after the 2007 season, but fired midway through the 2008 season.
As of 8:30 p.m. Monday, Brown said he had not spoken directly with Tuberville.
Brown came to Troy with Franklin, who is now the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee, and the two still talk regularly. Brown played for Franklin while Franklin was an assistant coach at Kentucky.
“It’s two different men, two different situations and a different set of circumstances,” Blakeney said. “Neal is a mature young man way beyond his years. I think he’ll consider everything they have to say. There’s nothing I can do about it.”
Brown, the youngest coordinator at the FBS level at 29 years old, led the Trojans to a No. 3 national ranking in yards per game at 485.7.
