AU BASEBALL: Capital City Classic postponed

MONTGOMERY — The Alabama and Auburn baseball teams left Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday night with their reputations intact, their uniforms clean and their fans soaking wet.

Alabama (8-1) and Auburn (9-2) were rained out in the Capital City Classic at the Montgomery Biscuits’ Riverwalk Stadium. The game has been rescheduled for March 24.

Pep bands and cheerleaders from both schools performed before the scheduled 7 p.m. start, but the field remained covered by a tarp. In fact, it came off for a few minutes before another band of rain moved across downtown Montgomery. Neither team took batting practice or infield before the game was postponed around 7:30 p.m.

As Auburn players were filing out of the clubhouse, a stadium worker wearing a hat that was half-tiger, half-elephant, smiled and said, “Thanks anyway, guys.”

“Rain’s part of it when you play an outdoor sport,” Auburn coach John Pawlowski said. “Anytime you get ready to play, you want to get it in. The City of Montgomery did a great job. It was raining and people were still sitting in their seats.”

Tide coach Mitch Gaspard wanted to play, but wasn’t heartbroken by the rain.

“We have six games scheduled this week,” Gaspard said. “So, from a pitching perspective, it’s not bad. We’ll just play five now.”

Alabama plays Michigan State in Tuscaloosa tonight and plays a four-game home series against Stony Brook this weekend.

The Tigers remain the SEC’s top hitting club, batting .373 as a team after they pounded out 53 hits and 32 runs in a three-game sweep of Miami (Ohio).

The Crimson Tide are still ranked second in the Southeastern Conference in earned run average (2.86) and fielding percentage (.981). They trail Vandy in ERA and are tied with Ole Miss with just six errors on the young season.

“Both teams are playing well early,” Pawlowski said. “We’re trying to grow some confidence and build on that as we get into conference play. To win a game against this kind of opponent you have to play at a high level.”

The Tigers are scheduled to play at home against Appalachian State at 6:30 p.m. today, then play a three-game series at Arizona State this weekend.
