PELHAM — Edward Bell’s Damien Carr scored 8 points for the Alabama team as it fell, 112-88, to Mississippi in the 20th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic at the Pelham Civic Center on Friday night.
Carr, the Class 1A and Opelika-Auburn News boys Player of the Year, shot 3-of-10 from the field — including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc — and dished out two assists in 25 minutes in the loss, which broke a streak of two wins by Alabama.
Lee-Huntsville’s Josh Langford — who is weighing offers from Alabama, Auburn and Georgia among others — led the Alabama squad with 25 points and nine rebounds.
Murrah’s Dundrecous Nelson, who will play at Ole Miss, led the Mississippi side with 22 points.
Woodland’s Courtney Strain, an Auburn signee, was the only Alabama player in double figures in a 78-56 loss to Mississippi in the girls game, snapping a three-year win streak.
Strain, the 2A Player of the Year and the all-time leading scorer in Alabama girls high school basketball history, netted 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.
Greenville’s Bree’Anna Lewis, who signed with Ole Miss, scored 17 to lead Mississippi.
Glenwood beats top-ranked Marengo
MARENGO — The second-ranked Gators baseball team took convincing wins over Morgan, 9-1, and No. 1 Marengo, 9-2, on Friday.
Spencer Riley (3-1) threw a complete game, giving up one unearned run to get the win against Morgan, which Glenwood beat for the AISA Class AAA state title last year. Skyler Murphy provided the offense, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs and five RBI, and Will Allison went 1-for-3 with two runs.
Carson Bowers, Cody Watson and Riley all went deep for the Gators against Marengo in support of Tyler Brown (5-0), who pitched a complete game and gave up one earned run. Bowers was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI, Watson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, Mathew Kuhlenberg was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs, and Joseph Fincher was 3-for-4 with two runs.
Glenwood (16-1) takes on Marengo again today at 11 a.m.
